What makes Emaweni so extraordinary

The English translation of the Zulu word Emaweni means "Place of many Cliffs". The ranch is situated on the top of the hills - about 1.200 m high. In the valley below at about 600 meters lies the great and historic Tugela river (Zulu: Thukela) which forms the boundary to Zululand for about 9 km.

Where you will find Emweni

Emaweni is situated in the province of Kwazulu Natal, home of the Zulus.

The closest village is Colenso, the next bigger city Ladysmith. With a drive time of about 4 hours to Johannesburg and 2 ½ hours to Durban, Emaweni is easy to reach.

With pleasure we will meet you at the airport in Johannesburg or Durban. Should you wish to drive on your own, we will organize a rental car for you.

History of the region

In the region around Ladysmith and Colenso is steeped in history. Towards the end of the 19th century, harsh wars were fought between the Boers and the British.

As a matter of historical interest, Natal owes it's name to Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese captain who discovered this province 1497 on his return from India.

Facilities

Despite the fact that the camp is set in the wilderness, we have done a lot to offer you a high level of comfort. Electricity, hot water out of our own bore-hole, telephone and fax are self-evident.

For relaxation or a get-together the lounge is the ideal place. Or rummage in our small library where some important information about the country and animals of South Africa is made available to you.

Of course there are also idyllic places outside for relaxation and freedom from restraint as well as a swimming pool.

Chalets

Our two thatched chalets will sleep a maximum of eight guests.

Each chalet compromises two, large double-bedrooms each with shower and toilet and an electrical heating for the colder winter months. The thatched roofs ensure an agreeable temperature, therefore air-conditioning is not necessary.

Drinking & Dining

After an eventful day, enjoy a sundowner at the viewing spot – the right preparation for an atmospheric evening at the fire. Experience a typical south-african barbecue (braai) with juicy steaks, bourwors (sausages) and a glass of south african wine.Enjoy typical south african specialties as well as international standards prepared by our catering team. Prior to departure we will query your individual dietary information to enable us to optimal meet your taste and requirements.

All meals will be served in the half-open dining area from where you also can enjoy the magnificant view.
