Himeville-Underberg
General Information
Named after the then Prime Minister of Natal, Sir Albert Henry Hime in 1902, Himeville is a small town nestled at the foot of the southern Drakensberg. With its high altitude and breathtaking views, Himeville is largely under-rated as a tourist destination. Approximately 130km from Pietermaritzburg and en-route to Sani Pass Himeville is a beautiful stopover. With its abundance of water Himeville is a water sport, as well as fly fishing attraction, and makes for a quieter holiday than the other busier parts of the Drakensberg.
The attraction that the annual Splashy Fen Music Festival brings to Himeville is great. Every year thousands of music fans descend on the area to enjoy the combination of music, food and drink – a celebration not to be missed!
One of Himeville’s best attractions is the Himeville Museum. Located in the original stone buildings dating back to 1900 the museum has a collection of fascinating San artefacts and is definitely worth a visit.
The Himeville Nature Reserve stretches along the eastern boundary of the town and holds antelope and has some prolific birdlife – something fun to do for the whole family. The activities directory provides information on all there is to do and see in the Himeville-Underberg area.
